CAC Worldwide Historical Background
Early Beginnings
In the early 20th century, a group of believers at Saint Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ijebu Ode, formed a prayer band in 1918. This group, driven by a desire for holiness and total dedication to God, sought to practice Christianity as it was during the apostolic days. This group became known for their fervent prayers and was often referred to as the “Aladura” (praying) Church.
Emergence of Joseph Ayo Babalola
Around this time, a young man named Joseph Ayo Babalola, already called by God, began performing miraculous works in Odo-Owa, Kwara State. Born in 1904, Babalola’s ministry captured the attention of the Faith Tabernacle group, leading to his integration into their fold in 1929.
The Great 1930 Revival
The Faith Tabernacle movement faced significant challenges, including doctrinal disagreements and internal discord. A pivotal meeting was held in July 1930 at Oke-Ooye, Ilesha, attended by key leaders and Prophet Joseph Ayo Babalola. During the meeting, Babalola prayed over a dead person who was miraculously revived, igniting a powerful revival that drew over a million people and resulted in numerous healings and conversions.
Impact and Legacy
The 1930 revival marked a significant turning point, leading to widespread evangelistic efforts and the rapid growth of the movement. Prominent figures such as Prophet Daniel Orekoya, who performed notable miracles including raising a dead pregnant woman, furthered the reach and influence of the revival.
Establishment of Christ Apostolic Church
Following divine revelation, Prophet Babalola began to instruct converts to worship together, leading to the establishment of what would become Christ Apostolic Church. This movement, characterized by its emphasis on prayer, divine healing, and total dependence on God, has grown into a significant religious force.
